No—it’s never too late, and you’re not alone. We regularly teach adult beginners of all ages in a private, judgment-free setting. With 1:1 instruction, you learn at your own pace while building real water comfort, confidence, and control without the pressure of a group.
No. Adult and teen lessons are private (1:1) or semi-private only. You’ll never be placed in a children’s class or a crowded group—your coach works with you the entire lesson at your pace.
We never force skills or rush progress. Adult fear is addressed through patience, predictability, and progressive exposure. Lessons begin with calm breathing and a clear plan so you feel in control, then skills are layered in small, achievable steps that build confidence without overwhelm.
Yes. Teen swimmers are taught using the same private, individualized approach as adults. Lessons are adapted to age, maturity, goals, and comfort level, making them ideal for older beginners or teens returning to the water after time away.
We understand that privacy is a major factor in feeling comfortable at the pool. Most Catch the Wave locations are designed with private changing stalls or family-style changing rooms rather than open locker room banks. However, because facility layouts vary by building, we recommend checking your specific location’s page or calling the front desk to confirm the exact changing setup so you know what to expect before you arrive.
Adults learn best through understanding and control. We focus on clear explanations, breath control, body position, and calm movement and we explain why each skill matters so fear is replaced with confidence and predictability.
Yes, when availability allows. Semi-private lessons are a great option for couples, friends, or family members with similar goals who want to share the cost while still receiving personalized instruction.
Primarily no—we prioritize private instruction. Adult lessons are offered mainly in private (1:1) or semi-private formats to ensure coaching is personalized and judgment-free. Group options are uncommon and depend on local availability
Your lessons are built around your goals through an Individualized Swim Plan (ISP). Many adults start with breath control, floating, and treading, then progress to lap swimming, freestyle/backstroke mechanics, endurance, or stroke refinement. Because lessons are private, we focus only on the skills you need most and adjust the plan as you progress.
It depends on your starting point and goals, but most adults feel meaningful improvement within the first few lessons—especially in breath control and comfort. Confidence builds in phases: calm breathing, floating/treading, then endurance and stroke efficiency. Your ISP adjusts as you progress.
That’s completely okay—many adults start there. We use a step-by-step progression: comfortable breathing above water, gentle exhale practice, then gradual face contact in small stages. You control the pace, and we don’t move forward until you feel calm and ready.
We work with many adults who have water-related trauma. Lessons are structured, predictable, and consent-based. Your coach moves at your pace and prioritizes emotional safety alongside physical skill development.
Yes. Adult lessons are adapted to your fitness, mobility, and endurance level. We focus on efficiency, relaxation, and technique—not speed or strength—so progress is achievable regardless of starting condition.
Bring a standard swimsuit and a towel. Goggles are optional—many adults prefer to start without them to build natural water comfort. Swim caps are optional unless recommended by your coach for specific skill work.
To reinforce BraveSwim™ survival skills, we offer optional, age-appropriate Water Safety Challenges at no additional cost:
During these challenges, swimmers practice applying their survival skills fully clothed — entering the water and demonstrating age-appropriate safety responses in more realistic conditions.
Water Safety Challenges are offered on an ongoing basis throughout the year. Please check with your local Catch the Wave office for upcoming dates and availability.
